![]() ![]() Men who laid railroad tracks and set up telegraph lines connected the settlers to the rest of the country with backbreaking labor. Ranchers, farmers, and miners played an important role in the West’s economic development. American Indians suffered the loss of their territory, traditional culture, and-in many cases-their lives. ![]() Settlers also risked illness, hunger, and drought to branch out into unexplored land. The figure of the lone cowboy who-like the knight of myth and literature-fends off the forces of evil is just one facet. Many people associate western fiction with cowboys, but the genre’s range is as varied as the people who populated the West. These books are available to eligible NLS patrons through their cooperating network libraries throughout the United States and its territories. This bibliography is a guide to selected western titles produced by The National Library Service for the Blind and Print Disabled (NLS) in audio and braille formats. ![]()
